THE LOCAL CUSINE OF MENORCA, TYPICAL PRODUCT AND DISHES<\/h3>\n

MAYONNAISE<\/h4>\n

We are sure you are already know mayonnaise<\/a>, the sauce made of fresh egg and lemon juice. What you may not know is that its origins are not certain and more than one legend has it that it was invented in Menorca<\/strong>. The name mayonnaise probably derives from Mahon<\/strong>, the capital of Menorca.<\/p>\n

MAHON CHEESE<\/h4>\n

Mah\u00f3n cheese is a white cheese made from cow\u2019s milk.
\nThe salty flavor<\/strong> is due to the fact that the grass that cows eat is full of sea salt carried by the wind.
\nDuring the maturation process, the cheese is rubbed with butter and paprika<\/strong>, that gives its typical orange color.
\nThe younger Mah\u00f3n cheese is soft and mild, while the aged one is harder and crumblier.<\/p>\n

ALBONDIGAS DE CABRACHO AND OTHER FISH MEATBALLS<\/h4>\n

Fish and seafood in Menorca is cooked in various ways<\/strong> \u2014 in pots, in the oven, in the form of pies, with rice and also as meatballs served with sauce.
\nCabracho meatballs are made of scorpion fish and are sometimes accompanied by a rich tomato sauce.<\/p>\n

TUMBET<\/h4>\n

This typical dish of the local cuisine of Menorca is prepared with fresh potatoes and other vegetables<\/strong> such as aubergines, peppers, onions, garlic and bay leaves. The mixture is then lightly fried in oil<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

OLIAIGU<\/h4>\n

Oliaigu is usually prepared in the summer. Its name means \u2018Oil and Water<\/em>\u2019 and it is a soup made with fresh\u00a0tomatoes, green pepper, onions, garlic, olive oil, salt\u00a0and water<\/strong>. It\u2019s served with slices of toasted bread and\u00a0ripe figs.<\/p>\n
