And they were right!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">This archipelago on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.my-rental-homes.com\/blog\/stresa-villas-gardens-and-islands-of-lake-maggiore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lake Maggiore<\/strong><\/a> includes three islands, a smaller one and a rock:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><strong>Isola Madre<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><strong>Isola Bella<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Isolino di San Giovanni,<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Isola dei Pescatori,<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Scoglio della Malghela.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">THE HISTORY OF THE BORROMEAN ISLANDS<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">In the past, <strong>many noble families used to spend their holidays on Lake Maggiore<\/strong>. Among these there was a Tuscan family, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Borromeo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Borromeo<\/strong><\/a>, who took possession of some islands within Lake Maggiore. And they build their <strong>sumptuous summer residences<\/strong> there. Even today the family owns Isola Bella, Isola Madre and two rocks.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">ISOLA BELLA AND ISOLA MADRE, THE MAIN BORROMEAN ISLANDS<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Isola dei Pescatori is the only Borromean Island permanently inhabited<\/strong>, while <strong>Isola Bella and Isola Madre are the tourist attractions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The reason is simple. On these two islands are <strong>splendid palaces and wonderful gardens<\/strong>. In fact, they are famous all over the world for the beauty of the surrounding landscape, the details of the gardens and the great variety of plants and animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Let&#8217;s find out more about Isola Bella and Isola Madre.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">ISOLA BELLA<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">Among the Borromean Islands, the most sumptuous is Isola Bella, which takes its name from the wife of Charles III Borromeo, <strong>Isabella d\u2019Adda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Although already property of the Borromeo family, until 1630 it was just a rock inhabited by fishermen. But from that moment on, the transformation of the island and the construction of the <strong>Borromeo Palace<\/strong> began. And <strong>it took almost 400 years to complete the work<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\">PALAZZO BORROMEO<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\">Everything inside Palazzo Borromeo was <strong>designed to amaze guests<\/strong>(Napoleon was one of them).<br \/>\nThe two main examples are the Berthier Gallery and the Caves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>The Berthier Gallery<\/strong> is a hall decorated with <strong>over 130 paintings<\/strong>, including copies by great masters such as Raphael and Titian. But <strong>it was also a bedroom<\/strong> where guests could sleep. In fact, the name of the Gallery comes from the Napoleonic general Louis Alexandre Berthier who spent a night in there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Completely different are the <strong>Caves<\/strong>. In these rooms <strong>shells and pebbles cover the walls, the floor and the ceiling<\/strong>. A truly amazing creation!<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\">THE GARDEN OF PALAZZO BORROMEO<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\">The garden of Isola Bella dates back to the period <strong>between 1631 and 1671<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIts most fascinating feature is that <strong>it has flowering in rotation throughout the year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">However, the most important monument is <strong>Teatro Massimo<\/strong>. It consists of 10 terraces on which statues, obelisks and fountains mingle with trees and bushes. At the top is the statue of the <strong>Unicorn<\/strong>, <strong>the heraldic symbol of the Borromeo family<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BORROMEAN ISLANDS, ITALY | Exploring Isola Bella on Lago Maggiore +  Palazzo Borromeo | Stresa\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AsupaORSLuU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\">ISOLA MADRE<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\">The transformation of Isola Madre started in <strong>the 16th century<\/strong>, during which the Borromo family built the\u00a0 wonderful palace that we still see today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>The gardens date back to the 18th century<\/strong>, when rare and exotic plants were introduced.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\">THE BOTANICAL GARDEN OF ISOLA MADRE<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\">According to <strong>Flaubert<\/strong>, the gardens of Isola Madre are the most voluptuous place in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Among the many noteworthy plants is <strong>the gigantic Kashmir cypress<\/strong>. The seed of the tree arrived on the Borromean Islands in 1862 from the Himalayas and now it is the symbol of Isola Madre. Moreover, <strong>it is the largest and oldest Kashmir cypress in Europe<\/strong>. Unfortunately, in 2006 a tornado hit Isola Madre, partially damaging the tree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In addition to the beautiful plants, the gardens on Isola Madre is home to some <strong>exotic animal<\/strong>, such as <strong>white peacocks, golden pheasants and parrots<\/strong>, which are free to move wherever they want.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p2\">THE PALACE ON ISOLA MADRE<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p2\">If the aim of Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella was impressing the guests, the one on Isola Madre was <strong>enjoying the family life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The most relevant rooms are the <strong>Reception hall<\/strong>, the <strong>Seasons room<\/strong>, the <strong>Venetian living room<\/strong>, the <strong>Library<\/strong>, the <strong>Battles room<\/strong> and the <strong>Popes room<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAnd from the large windows it is always possible to take a look at the gardens, the Lake Maggiore, the other Borromean Islands and all the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LAKE MAGGIORE AND THE BORROMEAN ISLANDS In 2019 The New York Times ranked the Borromean Islands among the 10 most fascinating places in the world.
