Among these, the most important occur on Good Friday and on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition to the religious rites, there are many other popular events which are truly suggestive for those visiting the island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, here are some of the most fascinating traditions of Easter in Santorini.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">EASTER IN SANTORINI, THE EVENTS<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">THE LIGHT OF CANDLES IN PYRGOS<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">People in Pyrgos usually light up their houses with lots of <strong>candles<\/strong> on Saturday of Lazarus. In addition, they organize<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>processions through the town during which they walk holding torches. T<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\"><strong>he whole town sparkles in the night<\/strong> and it is a very beautiful sight to behold, especially from a distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Greek Easter Pyrgos Santorini\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I8FGGsOb-o0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">THE HUGE CRUCIFIX OF MEGALOCHORI<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Saturday of Lazarus, in the central square of Megalochori a big feast takes place. During the feast, <strong>people decorate with flowers a large cross, which is over 10 meters high<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">THE NIGHT EASTER MASS IN FIRA<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">As in many other towns of Santorini, in Fira <strong>two evocative processions<\/strong> take place on Good Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition, on Easter night people from all over Santorini gather in Fira&#8217;s Cathedral for a <strong>night mass<\/strong>. It is a particular mass, since t<strong>he lights are turned off<\/strong> until midnight. At that moment, to celebrate the resurrection of Christ, the lights remain on until the end of the mass. After that, people celebrate with <strong>fireworks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">TRADITIONAL FOOD<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">During Easter, people of Santorini prepare some typical dishes. Among these are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flaouna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>flaouna<\/strong><\/a>, a donut with a red boiled egg in the center, and the <strong>melitinia<\/strong>, puff pastry filled with sweet cheese, sugar and eggs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">EASTER IN SANTORINI: THE ISLAND<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Greek Orthodox Easter coincides with <strong>the beginning of spring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Although Santorini is a typically summer tourist destination, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.my-rental-homes.com\/blog\/santorini-in-spring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>spring is a great time to visit it<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">One of the best thing about visiting Santorini in spring is that <strong>there isn\u2019t the crowd of the summer months<\/strong>.
