Anacapri in One Day: The Peaceful Side of Capri

Anacapri in One Day: The Peaceful Side of Capri

The island of Capri is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and captivating travel destinations in Italy. With its rugged coastline, crystal-clear waters, and luxury boutiques, it has been attracting visitors from around the world since the days of the Roman Empire. The island’s beauty shines in famous sites like the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni rock formations, the stylish Piazzetta, the Gardens of Augustus, and the scenic Via Krupp.
But there’s more to Capri than just the town of Capri itself. Anacapri, too, has so much to offer.

Anacapri: The True Capri

The town of Anacapri has ancient roots. It was already inhabited during the Greek era, and later became part of the Roman Empire along with the rest of the island. During the Middle Ages, it maintained a degree of independence, partly due to its remote location: until the 19th century, the only connection with the town of Capri was a steep stairway of over 900 steps, known as the Phoenician Steps (Scala Fenicia). A proper road between the two towns was only built in 1877, allowing for urban development.

Anacapri is located on the western and higher part of the island. Its name comes from the Greek “ana,” meaning “above,” as it sits on a plateau about 275 meters above sea level, with sweeping views over the sea.

Just a few kilometers from Capri town, Anacapri has preserved a distinct, simple, and authentic identity, becoming a favorite retreat for artists, writers, and travelers in search of peace and quiet.

What to See in Anacapri: 7 Must-Visit Spots

1. Villa San Michele

Built at the end of the 19th century by Swedish writer and doctor Axel Munthe, this is one of Anacapri’s most enchanting attractions. The villa stands on the remains of a Roman house and offers breathtaking views over the Bay of Naples. Its garden is filled with ancient statues, Roman columns, cypress trees, and Mediterranean plants. Inside, the museum displays archaeological finds, antique furniture, and objects collected by Munthe on his travels.

2. Monte Solaro

At 589 meters above sea level, Monte Solaro is the highest point on the island. From its summit, you’ll enjoy stunning views: Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula, the Faraglioni, and on clear days, even Calabria. You can hike to the top (about an hour’s climb) or take the relaxing chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in the center of Anacapri—a scenic and memorable ride.

3. Church of San Michele Arcangelo

This 18th-century Baroque gem is famous for its spectacular majolica-tiled floor, depicting the Garden of Eden with animals, plants, and Adam and Eve. The best way to admire the intricate artwork is from the panoramic walkway inside the church. A true masterpiece of Neapolitan art.

4. Church of Santa Sofia

The spiritual heart of Anacapri, this church sits in one of the town’s most picturesque squares. Its simple exterior contrasts with a richly decorated interior, full of frescoes and artwork reflecting the deep faith of the local community.

5. Casa Rossa

A striking 19th-century residence painted deep red, Casa Rossa was built by former American officer John Clay MacKowen. Today, it houses a collection of 19th-century paintings, many of which depict the Blue Grotto. An unusual and fascinating stop, perfect for lovers of art and history.

6. Sentiero dei Fortini Borbonici (The Path of the Bourbon Forts)

For hiking and nature lovers, this scenic coastal trail links the forts of Pino, Mesola, and Orrico, built in the 18th century to protect the island from invaders. The trail winds through Mediterranean scrub, dramatic cliffs, and postcard-worthy sea views.

7. Phoenician Steps (Scala Fenicia)

Once the only connection between Anacapri and Marina Grande, the island’s main port, this ancient staircase of over 900 steps is a fascinating piece of history. Today, it’s still accessible for those up for a challenge—either ascending or descending. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere.

Things To Do in Anacapri

Besides wandering the charming streets of the town center, be sure to taste the local cuisine: Caprese ravioli, rabbit “alla cacciatora”, and chocolate Caprese cake are local specialties. If you’re shopping for souvenirs, you’ll find many local artisans who welcome visitors into their workshops. Pick up a pair of handmade sandals, painted ceramics, or perfumes made with Mediterranean essences.

In summer, Anacapri also comes alive with music festivals, traditional celebrations, and village fairs.

How to Get to Anacapri

To reach Anacapri, you must first get to Capri island. Ferries and hydrofoils run regularly from Naples and Sorrento, with especially frequent service in high season. Once you arrive at Marina Grande, Capri’s main port, you can reach Anacapri by bus or taxi—both are quick and convenient.

Adventurous travelers can climb the historic Phoenician Steps, though it’s not recommended with luggage.
