Cannobio, the charming town on the western shores of Lake Maggiore

Cannobio, the charming town on the western shores of Lake Maggiore

The shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy are home to many charming towns. In a previous article we talked about Stresa. Today we tell you about Cannobio.

History of Cannobio

No one knows the date of the founding of Cannobio, but several archaeological finds say that a settlement existed in the area in very ancient times. Then, like many other localities around Lake Maggiore, Cannobio also came under Roman rule, becoming an important point for trade with territories beyond the Alps.

In medieval times, Cannobio prospered thanks precisely to trade but also to manufacturing, and today it is a popular tourist resort, particularly appreciated for the panorama of Lake Maggiore.

In Cannobio you will find a romantic atmosphere. The mild and breezy climate favors the growth of lush and varied vegetation, which frames the profile of the hills that is reflected in the clear water of the lake. Embellishing the view are the Castelli di Cannero, three rocky islets a short distance from the shore, on which stand the remains of an ancient 13th/14th century fortification.

Why is worth visiting Cannobio?

Although less popular than other towns on the Lake, Cannobio is perfect for a day trip by boat. Here’s more about what you can expect in Cannobio:

Lakeside Promenade

Cannobio boasts a beautiful lakeside promenade where you can take leisurely strolls, enjoy the views of the lake and mountains, and relax by the water. There is also a beach where you can relax and enjoy water sports. But most of all, the promenade is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a pleasant place to spend time.

Waterfront Dining

The town offers a selection of waterfront restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy delicious Italian cuisine while taking in the picturesque views of the lake. Fresh seafood and regional specialties are often featured on the menus.

Historical Architecture

The town features well-preserved historical buildings, charming narrow streets, and squares. As you explore the streets of Cannobio, you’ll come across ancient churches, quaint homes, and other architectural gems. One example is San Vittore Church, in the heart of the town. It dates back to the 11th century and its Romanesque architecture and interior frescoes are worth exploring. The Church of the Most Holy Piety is also very interesting.

Sunday Market in Cannobio

Cannobio is particularly famous for its vibrant Sunday market, which is one of the largest and most popular markets in the region. The market offers a wide variety of goods, including local produce, clothing, handicrafts, antiques, and more. It’s a great place to experience the local culture and shop for souvenirs.

Local Festivals

Throughout the year, Cannobio hosts various local festivals and events that showcase the town’s culture, traditions, and culinary delights. These festivals can offer a unique and immersive experience for visitors.

Boating and Watersports

Cannobio’s location on the lake makes it an ideal spot for water activities. You can rent boats, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore the lake from a different perspective.

Outdoor Activities

The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and outdoor adventures. There are trails that lead into the nearby mountains, providing stunning views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. A very easy walk is the one that leads to the gorge of Sant’Anna. Here the river has carved the rock walls to form a gorge with high rock spurs connected by an old medieval bridge that you can cross on foot. Cool water and rock spurs frame this enchanting place. You can cross St. Anne’s Gorge on foot thanks to the scenic medieval bridge and thus reach St. Anne’s Church.
