Erg Chebbi Dunes: A Complete Guide to Visiting the Sahara from Marrakech

A Complete Guide to Erg Chebbi Dunes

You may already know that Morocco offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes, from the vibrant souks and palaces of Marrakech to the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains, from the beaches of Essaouira to the vast horizons of the Sahara Desert. Indeed, for many reaching the desert is the most memorable experience of a trip to Morocco. Among the country’s most spectacular destinations are the Erg Chebbi dunes, a vast sea of golden sand surrounding the small town of Merzouga.

What Is an Erg?

An erg is a large expanse of sand dunes, and Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco’s best-known examples. Its enormous dunes rise dramatically from the surrounding rocky desert, creating a landscape that changes constantly with the wind and the movement of the sun.

Some dunes reach heights of around 150 mts (about 490 ft), making them particularly impressive when viewed from the flat desert around them.

What to Do in Erg Chebbi

Desert Adventures: Camel Rides, 4×4 Tours, Quad Biking

One of the most traditional activities is a camel trek starting from Mezourga. These tours are often arranged so that travellers reach the higher dunes shortly before sunset. As the sun drops towards the horizon, the landscape takes on a succession of warm colours and the shadows of the dunes become increasingly dramatic. For first-time visitors to the Sahara, this is often the defining moment of the trip.

Camel trekking is not necessarily the only way to reach a desert camp. Depending on the tour or accommodation chosen, it may also be possible to travel by 4×4. This can be a practical alternative for visitors who are uncomfortable riding a camel or want to reach parts of the desert that are difficult to reach on foot or by camel. Quad biking in Erg Chebbi is another popular activity, particularly for visitors who want to experience the dunes at a faster pace.

Depending on the itinerary, excursions may include visits to traditional settlements and areas inhabited by local communities. Traditional music, Moroccan tea, local cuisine and encounters with Amazigh communities can add an important cultural dimension to a Sahara itinerary.

Spending the Night in a Desert Camp

One of the biggest attractions of an Erg Chebbi desert tour is the opportunity to spend the night among the dunes.

Desert camps in the Merzouga area vary considerably. Some offer a relatively traditional experience with simple tents and shared facilities, while others provide large private tents with comfortable beds, bathrooms and more sophisticated amenities. Dinner is usually served at the camp, often featuring Moroccan specialities and traditional dishes. In many camps, the evening continues around a fire accompanied by local music and storytelling.

Regardless of the level of comfort, the absence of major urban centers makes the night sky one of the highlights of the experience.

Sunrise Over the Desert

If sunset is the classic Erg Chebbi experience, sunrise over the dunes is its quieter counterpart.

Many travellers choose to wake before dawn and climb one of the nearby dunes. As daylight gradually appears, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the ridges of the sand, creating long shadows across the desert.

The early morning is also one of the best times to appreciate the scale of Erg Chebbi. Without the heat and activity of the middle of the day, the dunes seem to stretch almost indefinitely towards the horizon.

After sunrise, visitors can return to camp for breakfast before continuing their journey or returning to Merzouga.

Best Time to Visit the Erg Chebbi Dunes

The climate is an important factor when planning a Merzouga desert trip.

Summer can be extremely hot, with daytime temperatures becoming uncomfortable for extended outdoor activities. During the hottest months, it is better to plan any activity in the early morning and late afternoon.

For many travelers, spring and autumn are among the most pleasant seasons for visiting Erg Chebbi. Temperatures are generally more manageable, while the desert remains suitable for camel trekking, hiking and overnight stays.

Winter can also be a good period to visit, particularly during the day, but nights in the desert can become surprisingly cold. Warm clothing is therefore essential if you are camping overnight.

How To Reach Erg Chebbi

The Erg Chebbi dunes are located in south-eastern Morocco, relatively close to the Algerian border. The town of Merzouga serves as the principal gateway to this section of the Sahara and is where most desert tours, camel excursions and overnight stays begin.

The distance between Marrakech and Merzouga is roughly 550–560 km by road, although the exact figure depends on the route. The journey can take approximately 8 to 10 hours of driving, making a day trip from Marrakech impractical.

The classic solution is a three-day Marrakech to Erg Chebbi itinerary. The first day can be dedicated to crossing the High Atlas and visiting places such as Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. The second day continues through the valleys and gorges of southern Morocco before arriving in Merzouga, where the camel trek and desert camp await.

What to Pack for an Erg Chebbi Desert Tour

Packing correctly can make a significant difference to your Erg Chebbi desert experience.

Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal during the day, while a warm jacket or fleece is advisable for evenings and winter nights. Comfortable closed shoes are useful for climbing the dunes, where loose sand can make walking surprisingly demanding.

Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are essential, as shade can be limited during outdoor activities. A reusable water bottle is also useful, particularly during camel treks and excursions.

Erg Chebbi or Agafay: Which One Should You Visit?

Travelers planning a desert excursion while in Morocco often encounter two very different options: Erg Chebbi and the Agafay Desert.

Agafay is considerably closer to Marrakech and can be visited on a day trip. It offers an impressive dry, rocky landscape and has become known for its desert camps, sunset experiences and outdoor activities.

Erg Chebbi is different. It is a genuine Sahara dune landscape, with vast expanses of sand and towering dunes around Merzouga. But, as we have said, traveling from Marrakech requires a substantial journey.

Ultimately, it comes down to where you’re staying, how much time you have, and what kind of desert experience you’re after.
