The Faraglioni, One of Capri’s Most Iconic Landmarks

The Faraglioni, Capri’s Most Iconic Landmarks

The Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula have long been considered among Italy’s most captivating and enchanting destinations. Here, you can find the perfect blend of nature, history, and culture. Every corner tells ancient stories and offers unforgettable views. However, just off the coast from Sorrento lies an even more precious jewel: Capri. And among Capri’s most iconic natural wonders are the Faraglioni, spectacular rock formations rising dramatically from the sea like silent guardians.

Take your time to explore the town of Amalfi, with its majestic cathedral and charming narrow alleys; Positano, famous for its pastel-colored houses cascading down the cliffs; and Sorrento, the natural gateway to the peninsula. Then, don’t miss the chance to plan a boat trip to Capri and immerse yourself in its stunning natural beauty.

What are the Faraglioni of Capri?

The Faraglioni are three towering limestone stacks that rise from the sea, shaped over millennia by the combined forces of wind and sea erosion. They lie just off Capri’s eastern coast, making them one of the island’s most iconic and photographed landmarks.

Each of the three Faraglioni has its own name and story:

  • Stella — The closest to the mainland, it is connected to the island and stands out for its elegant, imposing silhouette.
  • Mezzo — Located in the middle, it is famous for its natural arch, under which boats can pass. Tradition holds that sailing through this arch brings good luck and fertility.
  • Scopolo — The farthest and tallest of the three, it serves as a sanctuary for numerous seabirds, including the rare and protected blue rock thrush.

Myths, Legends, and Symbolism of the Faraglioni

The Faraglioni are also guardians of timeless myths and folklore that enrich the allure of Capri.

One of the most famous legends tells of the sirens said to inhabit the island. With their enchanting songs, they lured passing sailors into dangerous waters. According to myth, Parthenope, one of these sirens, fell in love with a mortal man. Heartbroken by an impossible love, she turned into stone — and the Faraglioni are believed to be the petrified sirens, eternally watching over the island.

Another legend is about the natural arch of the Faraglione di Mezzo. People say that sailing beneath it brings good fortune, prosperity, and, above all, fertility. Over the years, this tradition has become a cherished ritual for couples visiting Capri, often celebrated with laughter, songs, and toasts — transforming a simple boat ride into a symbolic and unforgettable moment.

The blue rock thrush, which nests on Scopolo, adds another layer of symbolism. Locals see the bird as a sign of freedom and resilience, and its graceful flight around the Faraglioni is a recurring image in Capri’s art, postcards, and cultural heritage.

Experiences and Activities Around the Faraglioni

Thanks to their unique location and the clarity of the surrounding waters, the area offers countless outdoor activities suitable for both adventure lovers and those seeking relaxation.

The best one is definitely a boat tour around the Faraglioni. Many operators offer trips of varying lengths, during which you can:

  • Sail right up to the towering rocks
  • Pass beneath the famous arch of the Faraglione di Mezzo
  • Discover hidden sea caves
  • Stop for a swim in the crystal-clear waters

If you are into snorkeling and diving, the area is teeming with marine life: colorful fish, starfish, octopuses, and small crabs thrive among the submerged rocks, making it a paradise for underwater exploration.

If you prefer to stay on land, the Faraglioni can be admired from several panoramic viewpoints across Capri. The two we prefer the most are:

  • Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus) — offering serene views perfect for photography or simply enjoying a peaceful moment.
  • Via Krupp — a historic pathway carved into the cliffs, leading to breathtaking observation spots.

Trekking lovers can combine their visit with hikes to Anacapri and Villa San Michele, exploring Capri’s lush landscapes and rich history.

Where the Faraglioni Are and How to Reach Them

As mentioned earlier, the Faraglioni are located just off Capri’s southeastern coast. They are only a short boat ride away from Marina Grande, the island’s main port.

Capri itself is easily accessible from the mainland by ferries and hydrofoils, which depart regularly from Naples, Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi, especially during the summer season.
