Frangias Beach, One of the Mykonos Hidden Beaches

Frangias Beach, One of the Mykonos Hidden Beaches

When people think of Mykonos, they often picture the whitewashed streets of Mykonos Town, the iconic windmills, vibrant nightlife, and its cosmopolitan atmosphere. Most of all, they think about the glamorous beaches and beach clubs. Yet the island has another side, one that rewards travelers looking for authenticity and unspoiled landscapes. Those interested in this side of Mykonos should visit the village of Ano Mera, the historic Panagia Tourliani Monastery, and those who also want to reconnect with nature should head to Frangias Beach, . This secluded stretch of coastline reveals one of the most untouched corners of Mykonos.

What to Expect When Goingo to Frangias Beach

Unlike popular beaches like Paradise, Super Paradise or Psarou where rows of sunbeds cover the sand, Frangias Beach has preserved its natural appearance and remains one of the island’s least developed beaches.

Located on the southern coastline, it sits inside a small sheltered bay surrounded by rugged rocky hills covered with low Mediterranean vegetation. This landscape creates a sense of privacy and isolation that is increasingly rare on Mykonos.

The shoreline is composed mainly of coarse golden sand mixed with small pebbles, while the crystal-clear waters display stunning shades of turquoise and deep blue that are characteristic of the Aegean Sea. Speaking of the sea, one thing you may notice when in Frangias Beach is the remarkable transparency of the water. Even several meters from the shore, the seabed remains clearly visible, making swimming particularly enjoyable.

Facilities at Frangias Beach

There are no loud beach clubs, large hotels, or commercial developments dominating the landscape. Instead, you can enjoy the soothing sound of the waves, the fresh sea breeze, and uninterrupted views of the coastline. However, you should arrive prepared, as the beach remains largely unorganized throughout the summer season. There are no permanent beach bars, restaurants, cafés, sunbed rentals, umbrellas, public showers, changing rooms, or lifeguard services.

Anyone planning to spend several hours here should bring sufficient drinking water, snacks or a packed lunch, sunscreen, hats, towels, and a beach umbrella since natural shade is limited, especially during July and August. Of course, adequate sun protection is essential.

Families with young children should consider the lack of facilities before visiting, while travelers looking for water sports or organized beach activities may prefer one of the island’s larger beaches.

On the other hand, the lack of facilities also means fewer visitors. Even during peak season, the beach often remains relatively quiet, allowing guests to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

Is Frangias Beach Worth Visiting?

So, if it’s this wild and has no facilities, is Frangias Beach really worth spending a day at? Yes.

First and foremost, the beach offers exceptional tranquility and privacy. And this is great for couples looking for a romantic escape or travelers who want enjoy a quiet day away from the island’s busiest tourist areas.

The crystal-clear water makes swimming particularly enjoyable, while the unspoiled landscape creates excellent opportunities for photography. Early mornings are especially beautiful, with soft sunlight illuminating the bay, while late afternoons offer warm golden tones that enhance the surrounding cliffs and sea.

Nature lovers will enjoy the rugged coastal scenery and untouched Mediterranean landscape, while travelers interested in exploring lesser-known locations will appreciate discovering a beach that remains relatively undiscovered compared to Mykonos’ internationally famous destinations.

How to Reach Frangias Beach

The most convenient way to visit Frangias Beach is by renting a car or a scooter.

Starting from Mykonos Town or other popular areas of the island, you can drive toward the southern coast using local roads before continuing along smaller access routes. Depending on current road conditions, the final section may involve an unpaved track followed by a short walk to the beach. Comfortable footwear is recommended for the final approach, particularly if walking over uneven ground.

Arriving by sea offers an entirely different perspective of Frangias Beach. You can plan a private boat tours to explore the southern coastline of Mykonos  and pass near this secluded bay. Approaching the beach from the water highlights the dramatic beauty of the surrounding cliffs and the vibrant colors of the Aegean Sea. It also allows you to discover nearby hidden coves that are difficult to access by land.

Frangias Beach is proof that Greece’s most famous island still offers peaceful places where visitors can escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. Its simplicity is precisely what makes it so appealing.
