Vineyards stretch along the hillsides, dry stone walls outline ancient plots of land, and sweeping panoramic views unfold across the Aegean horizon.

This trail winds through landscapes that have borne witness to centuries of local life. Each step echoes with stories of those who walked it before, whether they were farmers, merchants, or villagers moving between communities.

Main Attractions Along the Trail from Pyrgos to Emporio

Far from the island’s more touristic corners, it provides tranquility and a chance to engage with nature. Along the way, you’ll encounter native flora, while small lizards bask lazily on sun-warmed rocks. As the path leads gently into Emporio, you can feel a sense of connection to the island’s landscape and its spirit.

The main feature of the trail from Pyrgos to Emporio are the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, neighboring villages, and Santorini’s unique topography. However, along the way you are going to encounter classic Cycladic structures, including whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches. Moreover, the route passes near significant landmarks, such as the Venetian castle in Pyrgos and the medieval fortress in Emporio, providing glimpses into the island’s storied past.

The Medieval Beauty of Pyrgos

Perched on the slopes of Mount Prophet Elias, Pyrgos is the highest village in Santorini and an example of the island’s medieval heritage.
Once the capital, it boasts narrow winding streets, fortified walls, and a Venetian castle at its summit. The village offers panoramic views of the island, and has retained its traditional character, providing visitors with a serene atmosphere away from the island’s more tourist-heavy areas.

The Charm of Emporio

Emporio, the largest village in Santorini, lies at the foot of Mount Prophet Elias. Known for its labyrinthine alleys and well-preserved medieval architecture, the village exudes a timeless charm.
Central to Emporio is the Kasteli, a 15th-century fortress that once protected inhabitants from pirate invasions. Today, Emporio offers a peaceful retreat, allowing visitors to experience the island’s traditional lifestyle.

Getting to the Trail

To access the trail, start in Pyrgos, located approximately 7.5 km southeast of Fira.
From the main square in Pyrgos, head towards the provincial road leading to Prophet Elias. The trailhead is situated on the right side of this road, a few meters past the turnoff to Emporio. Ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes, carry water, and protect yourself from the sun, as shaded areas are limited.

Walking the trail from Pyrgos to Emporio is more than a physical journey. It is an exploration revealing the island’s natural beauty, historical depth, and enduring traditions.
