Lefkes, the Timeless Heart of Paros

Lefkes, the Timeless Heart of Paros

The Greek island of Paros is home to vibrant towns, golden sands, and traditional villages that preserve the essence of Cycladian life. While Parikia and Naoussa often attract the spotlight, the mountain village of Lefkes offers a more authentic and tranquil side of Paros.

A Brief History of Lefkes

The village’s name, Lefkes, is thought to derive from the Greek word for “white poplars,” which once covered the surrounding hillsides. Founded in the Middle Ages, it was originally established as a refuge from pirate raids along the coast. Its location in the island’s interior made it a safe haven for inhabitants seeking protection from the constant threats of the Aegean. Over the centuries, it grew into the capital of Paros, reflecting its importance as a political and cultural center. Today, Lefkes remains one of the best-preserved villages on the island, offering visitors a glimpse of Paros as it once was.

Why Visit Lefkes?

Unlike the busier coastal towns, this mountain village offers a serene atmosphere, historic churches, scenic hiking trails and artisan workshops. Here are what we consider the best things to visit while in town.

The Historic Center

The heart of Lefkes lies in its maze of narrow alleyways, shaded by bougainvillea and lined with whitewashed houses adorned with colorful doors and shutters. Unlike the more commercialized streets of Naoussa, Lefkes has preserved its authenticity. Wandering these alleys reveals hidden courtyards, small squares, and local shops selling handmade crafts and textiles. For photographers and dreamers alike, it is a place of endless inspiration.

The Church of Agia Triada

Dominating the village skyline is the Church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), one of the most beautiful churches in the Cyclades. Built in the 19th century with local Parian marble—the same marble used in ancient Greek masterpieces—the church is renowned for its striking bell towers and intricate details. Inside, visitors will find icons, frescoes, and a peaceful atmosphere that reflect the deep religious traditions of the village.

The Old Windmills

On the outskirts of Lefkes stand several traditional windmills, similar to the more famous Kato Milli in Mykonos.
These whitewashed structures, once used to grind grain, are now symbols of Cycladic heritage and offer stunning views over the village and surrounding countryside. At sunset, the sight of the windmills silhouetted against the sky is particularly enchanting.

The Byzantine Road

One of Lefkes’ most unique attractions is the Byzantine Road, a stone-paved path dating back over 1,000 years. Stretching from Lefkes to the coastal village of Prodromos, the road offers a scenic hike through olive groves, vineyards, and fragrant fields of herbs. Walking along this ancient path gives visitors a direct connection to the island’s history and a chance to experience its landscapes at a slower, more mindful pace.

Local Cuisine and Cafés

Lefkes is also a culinary delight. Its tavernas and cafés serve traditional Cycladic dishes , such as revithada (chickpea stew) or loukoumades (honey-soaked pastries). They are all made with locally sourced ingredients. The best way to enjoy these delicacies? Of course, dining on a shaded terrace, surrounded by mountain views and the sound of cicadas.

Festivals and Cultural Life

Despite its size, Lefkes is a vibrant cultural hub. The village hosts several festivals throughout the year, with music, dancing, and traditional food bringing the community together. One of the most important is the celebration of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 15, when Lefkes comes alive with processions, feasts, and a joyful atmosphere that welcomes visitors and locals alike.

How to Get to Lefkes

Lefkes is located in the heart of Paros, about 11 kilometers from the island’s capital, Parikia, and 10 kilometers from Naoussa. Its central location makes it easily accessible by car, scooter, or local bus, with regular routes connecting the village to the main towns and beaches.

For those arriving on Paros, the island is served by a ferry port in Parikia with connections to Athens (Piraeus and Rafina) and neighboring islands such as Naxos, Mykonos, and Santorini. Paros also has a domestic airport with flights from Athens. From either the port or the airport, you can reach Lefkes within 20 to 30 minutes.

Its location makes it an excellent base for exploring Paros’ diverse landscapes while enjoying the peace and authenticity of mountain life.
