Bellver Castle

Bellver Castle: History and Scenic Views in Mallorca

The island of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearics, is popular for its dreamlike beaches, picturesque villages, and vibrant culture. But Mallorca is much more than just a beach destination. Palma, the island’s capital, is full of places that are perfect for history lovers. The stunning Cathedral of Santa Maria (La Seu) is the most iconic example. Another is Bellver Castle.

A Castle Between Sky and Sea

Bellver Castle sits atop a hill just west of Palma’s city center, surrounded by a pine forest that preserves its tranquility and atmosphere. This location, offering gorgeous views of the city, the port, and the sea, inspired the castle’s name, which comes from the old Catalan “bell veer,” meaning “beautiful view”—a name that couldn’t be more fitting.

It was built in the early 14th century at the behest of King James II of Mallorca and was completed in just over a decade. Originally a royal residence, over the centuries it became a prison—famously housing the writer and minister Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. Today, thanks to careful restoration and preservation efforts, the castle functions as a museum and is one of the island’s main cultural attractions.

Why Visit Bellver Castle

The most unique feature of Bellver Castle is its architecture. It is one of the few circular castles in Europe, and that alone makes it remarkable. Its charm also lies in its three semicircular towers and the main tower connected by an arched bridge, as well as the symmetry and elegance of the two levels of Gothic-Catalan arcades.

Walking through the castle walls gives you a true sense of stepping into the past, far removed from the modern bustle of the city. And, as already mentioned, the castle’s upper terrace offers a stunning 360° view over Palma, the Tramuntana mountains, and the sea.

What to See at Bellver Castle

A visit to Bellver Castle is full of highlights and surprises. Here are the main attractions not to miss:

  1. The Central Courtyard
The heart of the castle is a circular courtyard with Gothic arcades on two levels. This is where ceremonies and daily activities took place. Pause to admire the striking contrast between the golden stone and the deep blue sky.

  2. The Keep (Tribute Tower)
This independent tower is connected to the main structure by an arched bridge. It was used for defense and observation, and today it offers one of the best panoramic views.

  3. The City History Museum of Palma
Inside the castle is the Museu d’Història de la Ciutat, which tells the story of Palma from its Roman origins to the 20th century through artifacts, maps, weapons, and documents. A great way to dive deeper into the island’s historical context.

  4. The Dungeons
In the underground rooms, once used as prisons, you can still see inscriptions carved into the walls by former inmates. The atmosphere is dark and poignant—a stark contrast to the lively spirit of Palma.

  5. The Panoramic Terrace
Climb to the top level to reach the terrace, one of the best lookout points in all of Mallorca. It’s ideal for taking photos or simply enjoying the landscape.

How to Reach Bellver Castle

Bellver Castle is at about 3 km from the center of Palma.
You can reach it by car or scooter. There’s a parking area near the entrance, although you may find difficult to find a spot during peak season. The road leading up is scenic and picturesque. Alternatively, you can take a bus or taxi.

If you’re feeling more active, you can hike or cycle to the castle. There are well-maintained trails that start from the El Terreno area and the Son Armadams neighborhood.
