Surfing and Chilling at Sidi Kaouki, Morocco

Surfing and Chilling at Sidi Kaouki, Morocco

With its relaxed vibe, charming architecture, and vibrant cultural energy, Essaouira is one of Morocco’s most enchanting coastal cities. Famous for its picturesque fishing port, colorful souks, contemporary art galleries, and its UNESCO-listed Medina, Essaouira blends heritage and creativity in a way that’s utterly unique. But beyond the city walls lies a world of adventure: scenic treks through Argan forests, horseback rides along Diabat beach at sunset, unforgettable nights under the desert stars—and of course, surfing the wild Atlantic waves. And when it comes to surf in Morocco, there’s one place that stands out: Sidi Kaouki, also spelled Siki Kauki.

Sidi Kaouki: A Wild Coastal Escape

Located about 25 km south of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is a peaceful and largely untouched village along the Atlantic coast. Its name comes from a locally revered Sufi saint whose tomb still watches over the village, adding to its mystical allure.

Sidi Kaouki is off the beaten path, and that’s exactly its charm. Over the years, it has quietly become a favorite for water sports enthusiasts—especially surfers—drawn to its raw beauty and unspoiled shores.

The beach here stretches for miles—wide, open, and framed by sand dunes and desert light. And the waves? Consistent, powerful, and beautifully formed, they make Sidi Kaouki a true hidden gem for surfers of all levels.

Why Sidi Kaouki Is a Surfer’s Paradise

Sidi Kaouki is blessed with excellent year-round swell and a mix of beach and reef breaks that cater to both beginners and seasoned surfers. When the waves are longer, cleaner, and more powerful the conditions are great for both longboarders and shortboarders.

For beginners, the northern stretch of the beach offers gentler, more forgiving waves. More experienced surfers will find bigger, faster sets near the rocky points or over deeper reefs that add a thrilling challenge.

What also sets Sidi Kaouki apart is its atmosphere: unhurried, friendly, and refreshingly free from the crowds you might find in more famous surf destinations like Taghazout. It’s surf culture at its purest—no stress, no hype, just waves and good vibes.

Planning Your Surf Experience in Sidi Kaouki

1. Surf Schools & Equipment Rental

The village is home to several well-run surf schools and rental shops, operated by passionate local instructors. Whether you’re new to surfing or want to refine your technique, you can book private or group lessons, rent boards and wetsuits, and even arrange transfers from Essaouira.

Experienced surfers can simply rent their gear—shortboards, longboards, softboards, and wetsuits are all available at reasonable prices, with a strong emphasis on quality and safety.

2. Conditions & Best Time to Surf

Thanks to its mild climate, surfing is possible all year round. That said, the best season runs from October to April, when the wind is lighter and the swells are more consistent.

In the summer months, surfing is best early in the morning or at sunset, when the northeast wind—the same one that fuels Essaouira’s kitesurfing fame—tends to ease.

Consider that water temperatures range from 16°C to 21°C (60–70°F), so it is better to wear a full wetsuit for most of the year. During the warmest months, a shorty might be enough.

3. Beyond the Surf

Even if you’re not surfing, Sidi Kaouki offers plenty to enjoy. You can explore coastal trails on horseback, ride quad bikes through dunes, or simply unwind on a terrace with ocean views, sipping mint tea as the sun sets over the Atlantic. It’s a place made for slowing down and soaking it all in.

How to Get to Sidi Kaouki from Essaouira

Getting to Sidi Kaouki is easy.

The most comfortable option is by car. The journey takes 30–40 minutes along a beautiful coastal road. You can also opt for shared grand taxis, available from Essaouira on request, or you can hire a private taxi for a more relaxed trip.

Many surf schools in Sidi Kaouki offer direct transfers from Essaouira—sometimes included in your package.

For the adventurous, renting a scooter offers a fun, flexible way to travel and enjoy the open landscape.
