The 5 Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Morocco

The 5 Most Beautiful Waterfalls in Morocco

Morocco is often celebrated for its vibrant souk of Essaouira, desert dunes, the ancient medina of Marrakesh, the Sahara Desert and the gorgeous natural wonders. Indeed, from the towering peaks of the Atlas Mountains to the lush valleys of the Rif, Morocco hides a collection of breathtaking waterfalls that reveal the country’s greener, wilder side. Whether you’re a nature lover, hiker, or photographer, these waterfalls offer an escape into tranquility and a glimpse of Morocco’s diverse natural beauty.

The Five Most Stunning Waterfalls in Morocco

1. Ouzoud Waterfalls – The Crown Jewel of the Atlas Mountains

If there’s one waterfall in Morocco that captures the imagination of travelers, it’s undoubtedly the Ouzoud Waterfalls. Located about 150 kilometers northeast of Marrakesh, near the village of Tanaghmeilt, Ouzoud is a spectacular three-tiered cascade plunging over 100 meters into a lush canyon surrounded by olive and fig trees.

Visitors can admire Ouzoud from multiple viewpoints. However, the upper terraces offers wonderful panoramic vistas to the base of the falls, where boats ferry visitors across the emerald pool for a refreshing misty experience. The area is particularly enchanting at sunset, when rainbows often appear through the spray and the light paints the cliffs in warm hues.

Everywhere the sound of rushing water echoes through the gorge, blending with the chatter of Barbary macaques, the playful monkeys that call this area home. In the early morning, the sound of birds and cascading water creates a serene, almost spiritual atmosphere.

Fun fact: the name “Ouzoud” means “olive” in Berber, and it is quite fitting considering the amount of groves along the paths that leads to the falls.

2. Akchour Waterfalls – The Hidden Paradise of the Rif Mountains

Deep in the Rif Mountains, near the blue-washed town of Chefchaouen, lie the Akchour Waterfalls, a series of cascades and turquoise pools that look like something out of a dream. This area is part of the Talassemtane National Park, a region known for its dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and winding river valleys.

The hike to the main waterfall is an adventurous three-hour trek along the river, passing smaller cascades, stone bridges, and shaded picnic spots. Along the way, you can stop for a dip in natural rock pools of cool, crystal-clear water. The trail is lined with poplar and fig trees, and the scent of wild herbs fills the air. At the end of the hike, the Grande Cascade d’Akchour rewards your effort with a stunning drop into a jade-green pool surrounded by moss-covered rocks. It’s one of the most photogenic natural sites in northern Morocco.

On the same trail, you can also visit the famous “God’s Bridge” (Pont de Dieu), a massive natural rock arch spanning the river, carved over millennia by water and wind. Standing beneath it feels like walking through a cathedral of stone.

Best time to visit the waterfalls is spring and early summer, when the flow is strongest and the vegetation is at its greenest.

3. Cascades d’Imouzzer – The Falls of Paradise Valley

Just north of Agadir, in the western foothills of the High Atlas, the Cascades d’Imouzzer are a beloved destination for both locals and travelers seeking a taste of Morocco’s natural beauty. These falls, found near the Berber village of Imouzzer des Ida Outanane, are part of the scenic Paradise Valley, a lush oasis of palm trees, banana groves, and terraced farms.

The main waterfall tumbles over white limestone cliffs into a series of terraced pools that shimmer in shades of turquoise and jade. During the spring, after the rains, the cascades are at their most powerful, creating a mesmerizing contrast with the red and ochre rocks of the surrounding landscape. In summer, when the flow decreases, the pools become perfect swimming spots — cool, refreshing, and often shaded by fig trees.

The area is also rich in argan trees, and local women sell pure argan oil products along the road leading to the falls.

We suggest you to visit early in the morning to enjoy the valley’s calm before tourists arrive, and stop at one of the roadside cafes for fresh orange juice with a view of the falls.

4. Setti Fatma Waterfalls – A Mountain Escape from Marrakech

A favorite weekend getaway for Marrakech locals, the Setti Fatma Waterfalls are located in the Ourika Valley, about 65 kilometers south of the city. The drive alone is worth the trip — winding through traditional Berber villages, terraced fields, and riverbanks lined with poplars and cherry trees.

Once you reach the village of Setti Fatma, a series of seven cascades awaits, each accessible by progressively more challenging hikes. The first waterfall is the easiest to reach, offering a cool mist and views of the valley below. For those with energy and good shoes, continuing to the higher waterfalls rewards you with even more breathtaking scenery and fewer crowds. Local guides are available for those who prefer a helping hand.

The area around the falls is filled with cozy riverside restaurants, where you can enjoy tagine or couscous while dipping your feet in the icy mountain water. It’s a refreshing contrast to the heat and bustle of Marrakech, making Setti Fatma an ideal day trip.

5. Cascade de Ras El Maa – The Charming Gem of Chefchaouen

While Chefchaouen, Morocco’s “Blue Pearl,” is best known for its sky-colored streets and Andalusian charm, it also hides a small but beautiful waterfall right at its doorstep. Located just outside the eastern gate of the medina, this modest cascade is a favorite spot for locals to gather, especially in the late afternoon when the light softens and the sound of water fills the air.

The falls are fed by a mountain spring, providing fresh, cool water that flows into a stream where women traditionally wash clothes and children play. Though not as tall or dramatic as Ouzoud or Akchour, Ras El Maa offers a sense of authentic Moroccan life, blending nature and culture in perfect harmony.

Above the falls, a short climb leads to a viewpoint overlooking Chefchaouen’s blue labyrinth. Visit it at sunset, when the medina glows below and the sound of the waterfall echoes softly through the hills.

Tips for Visiting Waterfalls in Morocco

  • Best time to go: Spring (March–May) is ideal, when the rivers are full from winter rains and temperatures are pleasant. In summer, water levels drop, but the pools are perfect for swimming.
  • Bring proper footwear: Many waterfalls require light hikes, often over uneven terrain or slippery rocks.
  • Hire local guides: They know the safest paths, hidden spots, and can share fascinating local stories.
  • Pack essentials: Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are musts — Moroccan sun can be strong even in the mountains.
  • Respect the environment: Keep the natural areas clean, avoid using soap in natural pools, and support local communities by purchasing from small vendors.
